A 19-year-old Houston teen died while trying to take a selfie for Instagram Tuesday.
The teen, identified as Deleon Alonso Smith, had tried to take a picture of himself holding a gun to his head, when it misfired, causing a bullet to hit him in throat, The Houston Police Department revealed, according to CBS' Houston affiliate KHOU 11.
He allegedly found the gun while hanging out with his cousin earlier in the day, it was around 1:30 p.m. when Smith began to take photos and the incident occurred. His cousin was reportedly in another room at the time.
Eric Douglas, the victim's uncle, heard about the shooting and rushed into the apartment to try and resuscitate him, but he had already died.
"It's the worst feeling in my life," he said, according to CNN.
"It's a numb feeling. It's still unbelievable," Smith's grandmother Alma Douglas said. "Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and then to hear this kind of news."
Smith was one day away from starting community college and leaves two young daughters behind, reported USA Today. His family members claim Smith had never talked about suicide, and that the shooting was a complete accident.
Investigators with the Houston Police Department are still looking into the shooting, but "all indications are this is an accident."
