How To Help Syrian Children: What You Can Do

The tragic story of Aylan Kurdi, a young Syrian child, has captured the attention of the world. Now the world is trying to find ways to help the refugees from the Middle East who are desperately trying to get into Europe, according to Today.

Kurdi, 3, died with his brother Ghalib, 5. They drowned to death in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea. More than 300,000 refugees have crossed the sea to reach Europe. Around 2,500 have drowned in the crossing this year, reported Today.

There are several charitable organizations working to help children from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries who are trying to escape terrorism and war. The UN Refugee Agency, Save the Children, UNICEF and the International Rescue Committee are all providing aid and support during the migrant crisis — and they are all seeking donations.

It is believed that 12 people drowned to death early Wednesday, with young Kurdi among them. There are more than four million Syrian refugees leaving the country, according to DB Techno.

More than a dozen senators have asked the U.S. government to take in more Syrian refugees by the end of 2016. So far, only 1,500 have been welcomed into the country. Germany, by contrast, will take in 800,000 refugees this year, according to the Guardian.

Americans can write to their representatives to encourage them to put more pressure on the Obama administration to welcome more refugees into the U.S. and aid in the migrant crisis.
