Kenny Britt appears to be playing in his final season for the Tennessee Titans. Britt tweeted as much on Tuesday and could find himself being phased out of the offense, USA Today Sports reports.
Britt, 24, is in the final year of his rookie contract. Perhaps convinced by his lack of targets, Britt believes this might be his last year in Tennessee.
If the Titans are going to pull that "Jared Cook card," a reference to how Tennessee let Cook play through his contract and then didn't re-sign him, Britt could see his role in the offense even further reduced. Tennessee has a talented receiving group, which includes Nate Washington, Damian Williams and Kendall Wright, that could arguably make Britt expendable.
So far this season, Britt has already played a minimal role in the offense. He's been targeted just 11 times over two games, according to USA Today Sports, and has recorded only 5 catches for 43 yards. His role in the offense isn't helped by concerns about his route running and willingness to block, which earned him a seat on the bench in Week 2 against the Houston Texans.
"That's two weeks in a row he's had a holding call, so it was more to refocus him," Titans coach Mike Munchak said after the game, via USA Today Sports. "It cost us a 10-yard penalty on a 10-yard gain, and we can't have that."
Munchak offered no hint about Britt's future after the team's overtime loss to the Texans.
"He just needs the season to develop and continue to get the opportunities ... and we think he'll get to where he needs to be," Munchak said. "It is Week 2. We've played two good defenses. So let's wait and see how things progress as we go forward with the receivers."
As for Britt, despite the tweet, he sounds like he wants to contribute to the team.
"I'd love to be involved as much as they want me to be, as much as I've been in the past. But as the game rolls out, I am there when they need me," Britt said after the game, via USA Today Sports. "I am not the coordinator, and I am not the quarterback - they decide where the ball goes. I am still ready to go. It is a long season and we have a lot of games to go."
Britt missed most of the 2011 season with a torn ACL and MCL. Since being selected No. 30 overall in the 2009 draft, Britt has 151 receptions for 2,397 yards and 19 touchdowns.
