Houston Astros outfielder George Springer has been out since early July after fracturing his wrist. One of the best clubs in the MLB will now receive a good source of offense as they look to win their first division title since 2001.
Springer was activated from the disabled list today, the Astros announced on Twitter. Springer, 25, was batting .264/.365/.457 with 43 runs scored, 13 home runs, 29 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in the team's first 75 games. Their offense has been lacking without his presence.
Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle noted earlier this week that the Astros could activate Springer from the DL as early as Friday, but his status was still a bit up in the air because his recovery process was taking longer than expected. He only started taking live batting practice only about two weeks ago.
"George Springer, who is on a rehab assignment at Class AA Corpus Christi, is scheduled to speak with manager A.J. Hinch about his status after the Hooks' game Thursday," Ortiz wrote. "Unless there are setbacks, it would not be surprising if Springer is cleared to be activated from the disabled list Friday."
The Astros lead the Texas Rangers by only two games in the AL West and they'll face all of their division opponents this month plus a series against the Minnesota Twins this weekend. The crucial matchups come in the middle and end of September against the Angels (Sept. 11-13 and Sept. 21-23) and Rangers (Sept. 14-17 and Sept. 25-27).
Houston also recalled Michael Feliz from Double-A Corpus Christi likely due to the injury to Scott Feldman, who could miss his next few starts. Feliz made a relief appearance with Houston earlier this season, but he could be used in the rotation at some point depending on how they handle limiting Lance McCullers.
