Florida's new head coach Jim McElwain might be changing things up down in Gainesville by playing junior cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III on offense, according to College Football 24/7 reporter Dan Parr.
McElwain already stated that Hargreaves will be returning kicks this season, and that is something he hasn't done since freshman year. Hargreaves has a knack for ball-hawking and has six interceptions through his first two years with the Gators.
"Let me say this too, the guy loves to practice. He's not a prima donna, which really to me is what sets him apart. I'll go ahead and tell you, but we've got packages for him on offense too," McElwain said via Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans.
It seems McEwain wants to turn around the program fast and will do anything to make that happen. When asked about the Gators quarterbacks, McElwain responded, "We've got two guys that are sevens and we're waiting for one of them to become a 10," via Sports Illustrated.
Treon Harris and Will Greer are the two quarterbacks who will be battling to throw the ball to Hargreaves on Saturdays. Harris has been named the starter for Saturday's game against New Mexico State and will begin the McElwain era in Gainesville.
Before arriving at Florida, McEwain turned around a program that had gone 3-9 for three consecutive seasons and had them 10-3 the last season before he left. The Gators were 7-5 last season, and McEwain is likely to pull out all the cards to turn it around.
The Gators have top talent, as players like Demarcus Robinson may line up next to Hargreaves, and if he can switch to offense effectively, it may give the Gators a nice combination. Hargreaves will likely be seen more on the defensive side of the ball, but it wouldn't be surprising if you see him lined up on offense this Saturday.
