A British Airways flight bound for London burst into flames on a Las Vegas runway moments before it was set to take off on Tuesday. The Boeing 777 jet experienced a catastrophic engine failure as it was taxiing on the tarmac at McCarran Airport, prompting passengers to evacuate from the damaged aircraft, according to the Independent Journal.
The fire broke out shortly after 4 p.m. (7 p.m. EST) and involved British Airways Flight 2276. The flight was bound for London's Gatwick Airport.
The incident was captured on video by a number of travelers, both from the airport and from other airplanes in the area. Many witnesses filmed the incident, as massive plumes of smoke emerged from the jet and passengers were forced to jump down inflatable slides in order to get away from the blaze, reports The Daily Mail.
Among the passengers of the aircraft, 14 people have been transported for medical care. A fire official on the scene states that the passengers' will just be treated for "minor injuries." Most of the injuries the passengers sustained came as they were sliding down the inflatable shoot, Clark County Fire Department Deputy Chief Jon Klassen said, according to CNN.
Initial investigation from the Federal Aviation Administration has stated that the aircraft's engine caught fire, which prompted the crew to abort the plane's takeoff and issue an evacuation order. The cause of the fire, however, remains unknown.
The airplane was carrying 159 passengers and 13 crew members when the fire broke out.
