Prince Ali of Jordan announced he is officially running for the office of FIFA president, according to BBC Sport. This announcement comes after it appeared that no one would challenge favored UEFA President Michel Platini for the seat.
The announcement of Prince Ali running helps stir the pot of competition against Platini, whom Ali believes is not the right man for the job, according to the BBC. Ali claims Platini would bring "more corruption" to FIFA if he won the presidency.
"He's allowed every national association to have a voice. He consults and engages with chief executives and presidents... that's been a breath of fresh air. He listens and he's very innovative and creative," stated Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan.
It is an uphill battle for Ali to gain backing for his candidacy, largely in part to Platini holding support from four of the soccer confederations. His work with UEFA has done wonders for the European game's growth, yet that does not seem enough for Ali to trust him to run FIFA.
The official vote takes place on Feb. 26, 2016. A majority of soccer supporters believe Platini has the edge, but Prince Ali could be the man to pull off an unthinkable upset.
