Notre Dame games against Michigan have a long history, and many are disappointed that the two don't meet anymore. All that could change very soon as Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said a renewal of the historic matchup is "trending up," according to college football reporter Chase Goodbread.
"It's something that we need to get in line to get that going. I think that's something that everybody wants to get going and get Michigan back on the schedule. I think that sentiment is coming back to the forefront of where college football needs to be and some of those classic rivalries coming back together. I know we're going to be working hard to see if we can get that done. I think were going to see it happen," said Kelly, via The Rich Eisen Show.
Both Michigan and Notre Dame fans likely miss the historic rivalry that put both teams on the front page. It will be difficult to make this happen though, as the Irish have an agreement with the ACC to play five opponents each season. The Irish also had to figure which rivalries to keep and lose. They kept annual games with Stanford and USC, which may be for California recruiting purposes.
The rivalry had fans on the edge of their seats for decades. Getting rid of the USC game seems almost out of the question as people will not want to see that game go either, but the Irish are likely to figure a way around this issue. With big name coaches like Kelly and Jim Harbaugh, this game is just good for the sport of college football.
This historic rivalry goes back to the 1800s and the teams have played together 42 times. Michigan has the edge in the rivalry and is ahead seven games on the Irish through the years. Notre Dame beat the Wolverines in their last game in 2014, but fans and alumni are waiting for this historic matchup to resume again.
