An Ohio lobbyist, who was playing golf with some friends at a Michigan golf resort, died from multiple bee stings after he disturbed their beehive while looking for his ball in the woods, police said on Thursday.
Darryl Dever, 64, succumbed to his injuries after the swarm of bees stung him more than 20 times on the head, neck and shoulders at the Treetops Resort in Dover Township, said Michigan State Police Sergeant Mark Tamlyn, according to Reuters.
The bees just suddenly emerged from the ground and stung him at least 20 times, according to Tamlyn. He added that Dever did not have any allergies to bee stings, but enough bee stings can be fatal, even to a person without an allergy, the Daily Mail reported.
Adam Hewitt, Dever's lobbying partner for nine years, said that Dever had accidentally stepped on a bee hive while golfing. Medical personnel, as well as a doctor who was golfing with him in his party, tried to revive him but to no avail, according to The Colombus Dispatch.
The incident follows a month after man died after a swarm of bees attacked workers at a construction site in California, as HNGN previously reported.
