Joyce Mitchell Interview: Claims Prison Escapees Manipulated Her

Joyce Mitchell — the woman infamous for helping New York convicts Richard Matt and David Sweat escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Upstate New York — will appear in her first TV interview next week, claiming the two escapees manipulated her.

The already filmed interview, conducted by Matt Lauer, will air in two parts on "Today" (Monday, Sept. 14, and Friday, Sept. 18) and as a special two-hour "Dateline" Friday, Sept. 18.

During the interview, Mitchell, 51, said she had been going through depression when she first encountered and eventually came under the control of Matt and Sweat, according to the New York Daily News.

"I was going through a point in my life — a lot of people go through depression. A lot of people go through that. And I just got in over my head. And I couldn't get out. And I couldn't tell anybody," she said, according to Us Weekly. "I couldn't tell my husband. Couldn't tell my family. I couldn't tell my coworkers. I couldn't tell anybody. There's nobody you can tell."

When asked if she was under the "complete control" of Matt, she responded: "Yes. He was good at that."

Mitchell pleaded guilty to bringing contraband into the prison after her involvement in the escape was revealed and is currently in Clinton County Jail where she awaits sentencing. Mitchell faces up to seven years for felony and misdemeanor charges, according to Today.
