After spraining his ankle during an offseason workout, Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams said he'll be ready for training camp. Williams, forced to wear a walking boot, insisted it's only a precautionary measure and doesn't expect his ankle to be a problem again this season.
Doctors diagnosed Williams with a sprained right ankle and bone bruise, according to ESPN. He's scheduled to under another MRI next week before removing the walking boot. With a history of injuries and training camp around the corner, Williams tried to assuage any concern that his ankle injury is serious.
"(My ankle's) good. It's good. As long as I'm ready for the start of the regular season (Oct. 30 in Cleveland), that's all that matters, but I'll be ready for the start of camp," Williams said on Thursday, via ESPN.
He also addressed the walking boot he's wearing and his eagerness to return to the court.
"Basically, this is just preventative," Williams said, via Newsday. "They have me in it now so I don't have to worry about it when the season starts.
"It's frustrating because I want to be hooping with the guys right now. I want to play in this. It's frustrating. I have to deal with [the media] speculating. It is what it is. As long as I'm ready for October, that's all that matters to me. But I'll be ready for it."
Williams suffered the ankle injury 2 1/2 weeks ago while working out. After feeling discomfort in his ankle, he underwent an MRI, which revealed inflammation in the ankle.
The Nets have reason to be concerned about the injury - Williams struggled for most of last season with inflammation in both his ankles. A healthy Williams is an integral part to the Nets' championship aspirations and, given the ages of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, the window for Brooklyn to win an NBA title is finite.
