Spanish police said that they have found the body of missing American tourist Denise Thiem, who went missing in April after taking a journey to the ancient Catholic pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago.
Police on Friday arrested a suspect - 39-year-old Angel Munoz Blas - linked to her disappearance, according to El Pais Spanish newspaper. The suspect led the police to Theim's body.
"Following months of intense investigations, our agents have found the body of Denise and detained the alleged perpetrator," said Ignacio Cosidó, the director general of the Spanish police, according to The New York Times.
The 41-year-old American tourist from Arizona was last seen on April 5 in Astorga, reported the Associated Press. The northern Spanish town is situated on the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
Arizona Senator John McCain wrote to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last month, asking the Spanish premier to allow the FBI to assist in the investigation.
Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy wrote to Denise's parents earlier this week, saying, "he understands the pain of a family that does not know where their daughter is," according to BBC News.
Denise had recently quit her job to travel the world.
"She had learned that the Camino was a very enlightening experience. She was travelling for a couple months around the world, so the Camino was her last stop, and then afterwards she was supposed to fly back home," Thiem's relative Desiree Yao told NPR.
