Los Angeles BMW: Police Department Unveils Tiny Electric Police Car

The Los Angeles Police Department has introduced the newest addition to its taskforce on Friday - a black-and-white BMW i3. BMW is lending the minuscule and less-threatening police cruiser to the department for a year as part of Mayor Eric Garcetti's aspiration of having more plug-in cars in L.A.'s police force.

"Today, we take another step toward becoming the most sustainable city in America," Garcetti said, according to USA Today. "This year, Los Angeles will become home to the largest city-owned fleet of pure battery electric vehicles anywhere in the country, and we will save taxpayer dollars along the way."

While it is a car that is not suitable for television-worthy high-speed chases, the tiny car is still as powerful, going 0 to 30 mph in just 3.5 seconds.

The car also procures 81 miles per charge or 150 miles per charge, depending on the model of the electric-powered car, according to the Daily Mail UK.

The police force is not the only department that BMW has supplied with electric-powered cars. It lent 160 electric vehicles to the city in total, which will also be used by the fire department and water and power services.

BMW has also loaned an additional 128 plug-in hybrids to general services in the city, according to Inside EVs.
