Tom Hardy shut down a reporter during the press release of "Legend" at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday when the journalist asked about past media reports that suggested the actor had an "ambiguous" sexuality.
"In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality," said the journalist, according to Defamer. "But given interviews you've done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?"
The "Inception" star fired back at the reporter. "What on earth are you on about?" he asked the reporter, who belonged to a Toronto-based LGBT publication.
The reporter was referring to a 2008 magazine interview, in which the English actor admitted to having gay encounters as a young boy. "But what is your question?" Hardy asked in a higher and resolute tone of voice.
"Of course I have," Hardy said in the interview at the time when asked if he'd ever had sexual relations with a man. "I've played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I'm in my thirties, it doesn't do it for me. I'm done experimenting but there's plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life."
The actor later clarified that the words were taken out of context and what he meant to say was that he had experimented with other men for films and not in real life.
"I'm wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality," the reporter said to Hardy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hardy then asked intimidatingly: "I don't find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality. Are you asking about my sexuality?"
"Hum... sure," the reporter replied. to which Hardy asked "Why?" before dismissing the reporter with a concluding "thank you," while "Legend" director Brian Helgeland and co-star Emily Browning looked on awkwardly.
Hardy plays a bisexual gangster in "Legend," starring alongside himself as the infamous East End London gangsters Ronnie Kray and Reggie Kray.
