Brittany Mugrauer, a 24-year-old mother of two, was brought into custody on Saturday on charges of felony child endangerment, according to the Star Tribune.
The Jackson County, Mo., prosecutor's office made a statement that they didn't believe that Mugrauer doesn't have an attorney as of yet, FoxNews reported. She has not made a court appearance yet.
Mugrauer claimed that she had put her children in the cave for a couple of days and knew that they were all alone. Both of the children were transported to Children's Mercy Hospital. The staff members there were able to bath them, and they were given fresh clothes to wear.
The six-year-old claimed that he was supposed to be in first grade, but hadn't ever attended school, according to Associated Press. The other child, a four-year-old child, was found eating a cup of ramen covered in filth. The children were also shoeless and poorly clothed. This was all discovered by investigators who were serving a search warrant which was possibly related to a stolen car. It was a pure accidental discovery by the authorities.
The area where the children found was nothing more than a dirt floor. The caves, originally used for early 1900s limestone mining, had been repurposed for additional use. They have paved roads, business entrances, some space is even used to store cars that thieves have taken to break down the parts and sell them. There are millions of square feet in the caves.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office has kept quiet about all of the other details about the case, until further investigation has provided more evidence.
