Pixar: ‘The Incredibles 2’ Hitting Theaters Soon?

Fans of Pixar's "The Incredibles" have been clamoring for a sequel for more than a decade now, and it's easy to understand why. Brad Bird's 2004 film came right as the superhero genre was kicking into full gear, and it boasted an original and highly entertaining story that stood apart from the endless stream of comic book adaptations.

Last year, the studio officially confirmed that a sequel was in the works, but with a crowded schedule that included "The Good Dinosaur," "Finding Dory," "Toy Story 4" and "Coco" spread out all the way through November 2017, moviegoers had no idea when they'd finally be able to see the Parr family back in action. While we still don't know exactly when "The Incredibles 2" may drop, we do know that the project has moved ahead of "Cars 3" in the development schedule.

Director Brad Bird spoke to Collider about the film's release date and revealed that:

"Incredibles was supposed to happen after Cars, and our wheels just happened to click a little earlier so they moved us up. Release dates are a little fluid when you're making films so far in advance," he said.

"Cars 3" also lacks a release date set in stone, so it's not as if this information reveals the X-mark on the map. However, Pixar does have an untitled film set for a June 15, 2018 release which may or not be "The Incredibles 2."

In terms of the film's storyline, Bird revealed that he's roughly three-quarters done with the script. Like the original, Bird will also direct and it will be his first animated feature since 2007's "Ratatouille" (his live-action films since then include "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and "Tomorrowland").

Bird told Cinema Blend earlier this year that "Incredibles 2" will make note of the surplus of superhero films and comic book movies that have flooded theaters in recent years. However, he wants the focus to remain on family, a core theme of the first film that resonated with fans across the globe. Other than that, nothing is known of the film's story though we really hope Samuel L. Jackson's Frozone will be making a comeback.

We'll keep you posted as more details begin to emerge.
