Two players from West Virginia were stabbed this weekend in downtown Morgantown, and both of them have been dismissed from the team since, according to Sunshine Wiles of wvmetronews.com.
After midnight on Sunday, Morgantown police found three men with stab wounds that were non-life-threatening. The two players wounded were redshirt freshman defensive lineman Tyree Owens and running back Kenyatta Greene. Jamal Calay was the third man found with stab wounds, although he is not affiliated with the team.
Police have arrested 22-year-old Devin Colston, a basketball player from Alderson Broaddus University, according to Wiles.
"Mr. Colston is in custody because he committed the most serious offense. He's the one that actually cut and stabbed the three individuals who ended up going to the hospital for treatment," said Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston, via wvmetronews.com.
Both Greene and Owens have been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules. The Mountaineers had just beaten the Liberty Flames 41-17 on Saturday before the altercation happened later that night.
The Mountaineers have won their first two games of the season but have their biggest test yet coming this weekend against Maryland. Head coach Dana Holgorsen likely wished to keep his team focused on football, and removing negative attention was likely his plan when dismissing these players.
Owens was heavily recruited in high school and had choices of schools like Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Wisconsin and others, according to Wiles. The Mountaineers haven't had a 10-win season since 2011, and Holgorsen is likely keeping his team focused on football, as this incident could be a tough distraction.
