The Golden State Warriors are the reigning NBA Champions and with a young core of players that have a chance to make this into something really special. There haven't been many changes made to the roster but instead the changes have been made to the coaching staff. Luke Walton took over for Alvin Gentry as the associate head coach and now it is being reported that the Warriors are finalizing a deal with Steve Nash to become a part-time player development consultant, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.
Nash will come on to consult one of the best shooting duos in NBA history in Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. There are only two players in NBA history that have had a season where they shot 50 percent from inside the arc, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line with more than eight assists and two threes per game and they are Nash and Curry.
Nash retired from the NBA last season after two injury filled seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and has since been getting involved in different endeavors. Nash is already the general manager for the Canadian basketball team, he is in the process of making a film with his company and now he has another title to add to his resume.
Nash and Warriors head coach have a sense of familiarity with each other from when Nash played for the Phoenix Suns when Kerr was the general manager there. Nash was not planning on going into the coaching side of the NBA but was reportedly lobbied aggressively by Kerr. If and when this deal gets done Nash will be an occasional tutor to the guards on the Warriors.
Nash hasn't coached before but when he was out with injury last season he reportedly did a number in mentoring Jordan Clarkson who went on to be an NBA All-Rookie first team selection. Nash has also reportedly recently worked with C.J. McCollum among other players so he should be right in his comfort zone in this new position.
This basically sums up how people feel about the Warriors adding Steve Nash to their organization:
