New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's injury, suffered as a result of a fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend, may be even more extensive than originally thought. According to a Tuesday report from Dan Graziano of ESPN, via Sportscenter's Twitter feed, Pierre-Paul, who had surgery after the mishap which resulted in the amputation of his right ring finger, is also missing a portion of his thumb.
Pierre-Paul recently returned to the Giants fold to meet with coaches and team doctors so that they could assess the full damage of his injury. JPP had stayed away from the team throughout his ordeal, leading to numerous reports and rumors about the real extent of his injury. Some had suggested that he had suffered a broken thumb along with the amputation of his ring finger, but it now seems that the situation is even worse than that.
After Pierre-Paul met with the Giants and coach Tom Coughlin, owner John Mara and GM Jerry Reese last week - a meeting that reportedly went as well as it could have considering the circumstances - negotiations on his contract and the $14.8 million franchise tag the team offered to him prior to his injury were likely to be next.
With word of the full extent of Pierre-Paul's injury breaking, it could potentially put his future with Big Blue in doubt. Former players like Brian Baldinger and Hugh Douglas have already questioned whether JPP would ever be able to return to form after losing his ring finger. With his thumb reportedly gone as well, his days of impact play may very well be over.
