Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for season two of Fox's "Gotham."
While Fox's "Gotham" was far from a failure in its first season, it didn't fully leverage the current excitement surrounding comic book properties. As a result, showrunner Bruno Heller is bringing fans season two from a completely different perspective, referring to it as the "Rise of the Villains." This will put Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin at the forefront while also placing a greater emphasis on other new and existing criminals.
With an increased focus on the baddies of the show, one would think there'd be an increase in collateral damage. Well, one would be right. TV Guide is reporting that season two of "Gotham" will include the death of two "significant" characters during its first few episodes. One death is described by the outlet as "sudden and unexpected" while the other will serve as a motivating factor for James Goron's (Ben McKenzie) character arc over the course of the season.
Both deaths reportedly stem from the formulation of the Maniax, a group of escaped Arkham Asylum inmates - including Jerome/Joker (Cameron Monaghan) - formed by the Galavans (James Frain and Jessica Lucas). The sibling duo has apparently arrived in Gotham to wreak havoc and unleash chaos in order to move up the criminal hierarchy and challenge Taylor's Oswald Cobblepot for the throne.
Even though Morena Baccarin has been upgraded to series regular for the second season, her character is the romantic interest and co-worker of James Gordon, thus putting her squarely in the crosshairs of any ambitious villain. Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), Gordon's ex-girlfriend and current Arkham inmate could also be in danger.
"Gotham" season two will premiere on Monday, Sept. 21 on Fox.
