The Dallas Cowboys have traded away a conditional draft pick to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Brice Butler, according to David Helman of dallascowboys.com.
The Cowboys have been in search of a wide receiver ever since the news of Dez Bryant's foot injury broke during their season-opener. Bryant underwent surgery foot surgery Monday night, and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
The Cowboys have worked out receivers Hakeem Nicks, Clyde Gates, Nick Toon, and Austin Pettis in search of a replacement for the injured Bryant. Dallas chose to go for Butler, who is still developing as he is in his third season in the NFL.
Butler had 280 yards receiving with two touchdowns last season. While Butler will not be the number one target, he will likely be another weapon that the Cowboys feel comfortable with. Butler was not brought in to replace Bryant as he is one of the top receivers in the game, but he was added to bolster the receiving core.
Butler will join Cole Beasley, Devin Street, and Terrance Williams at wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. Quarterback Tony Romo will likely look to these guys, but also his tight ends while Bryant is out.
Jason Witten and Gavin Escobar accounted for all of Dallas' touchdowns on Sunday night. Look for Romo to rely on his tight ends, especially his safety target Witten. Butler could be a big pick up for the Cowboys, but it may take a game or two before he is adjusted to the Cowboys offense. Dallas plays NFC East rival the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, and it should be interesting to see how head coach Jason Garrett utilizes his new receiver.
