Jerry Casale, the bassist for the band Devo, apologized for those offended by his 9/11-themed wedding, Billboard reported. Casale issued his apology via social media.
"Deep apologies for all offended. There is a real explanation and its not what you think. Surprise cake and pix to TMZ was a set up. TBC," Casale wrote on Twitter.
Photos from Casale's wedding reception were leaked to TMZ, and the images show Casale, 67, and his wife Krista Napp, 26, posing behind their wedding cake which was designed in the likeness of the World Trade Center before the horrific 9/11 attacks. Napp and Casale's faces adorned the top of the cake, according to photos obtained by TMZ. Guests also received box cutters as party favors at the wedding.
Casale said the wedding theme was a surprise from a friend who commented on the fact that Casale and Napp's Sept. 14 wedding date fell on the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The friend handled the theme and was responsible for the cake design, according to Billboard.
"I understand why those pictures would offend people," Casale told the New York Daily News. "The cake was such bad taste."
The musician said all the negative attention focused on the couple's special day has been hard on his new wife. He said the fallout has ruined the couple's honeymoon and he intends on finding out who leaked the photos to TMZ.
"It had to be one of the guests," he told the NYDN. "I feel pretty betrayed, like I was set up. So it's all unfortunate. One dumb thing led to another .... and then becomes a big incendiary story."
