‘Prometheus 2’: Ridley Scott Will Answer THAT Big Question in Sequel

"Prometheus" was a flawed movie with varying levels of ridiculousness, but you must respect the film's ambition. Director Ridley Scott created a godlike allegory for the creators of humankind and set his sights far beyond the well-worn xenomorphs. Unfortunately, the end of the film left galaxy-sized questions hanging in the balance, something fans did not appreciate.

For those still interested, Scott plans to answer those big questions in "Prometheus 2" which he says will start production in January 2016. Speaking with Collider, Scott revealed that his sequel will further explore the Engineers and their motivations.

"It starts off with a very grand idea - or a grand question, really," Scott said while at the Toronto International Film Festival. "Who are they and why did they create such evil biology and bacteriology? And [in creating], to protect themselves from what? So the questions are answered there, or rather, beginning to be answered in Prometheus 2."

Following tragedy and disaster on a trip to a far off planetoid, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and the android David (Michael Fassbender) ended "Prometheus" by taking off for the Engineers' home world in an attempt to discover the origins of humanity. Shaw hopes to learn why the Engineers created the human race and then why they attempted to wipe us all out. The sequel will not interfere with Neill Blomkamp's ("District 9") planned "Alien" film.

Another report from TIFF says that both Rapace and Fassbender will be reprising their roles in the sequel (they were the only survivors, after all). Scott has said there were multiple versions of the script floating around, with Michael Green ("Green Lantern") handling the final draft. What stage the writing process is in at the moment is not known, however.

Although "Prometheus" failed to take hold like Scott's previous sci-fi films, the early buzz surrounding "The Martian" suggest a return to form within the genre for the acclaimed director. We sure hope that carries over into "Prometheus 2" which is scheduled for release sometime in 2017.
