The rare and stunning Blue Moon diamond is set to sell at auction with an estimated worth of around $55 million, according to CNBC. The 12.03 carat flawless gem will be going on sale at a Sotheby's jewelry auction this November, according to Yahoo News.
"Blue for me is the most mysterious and magical of all diamond colors." said Sotheby chairman David Bennett. "This gem will now take its place among the most famous gems in the world."
Gems that have a natural hue like the Blue Moon diamond are rare, with a 1-in-10,000 chance of finding one, according to the Daily Mail. "While any diamond with natural blue coloration is a rare discovery, some are so exceptional that they emerge only once in a lifetime - a blue moon. This diamond is one of those remarkable occurrences," Bennett said.
The Blue Moon diamond was found in South Africa's Cullinan Mine and has been shown around the world with onlookers admiring its radiance and shine, which some say is magical.
The Cullinan mine is responsible for at least one fourth of the world's diamond supply and is expected to produce around one million carats in the span of half a century.
