Following the 8.3 Earthquake that took place on September 16th in Chile a state of emergency has been declared in the city of Coquimbo.
A death toll of no less than 11 people were estimated during the earthquake as well as a lot of damage to local structures. One million people within this central area of Chile also had to leave their homes. The tsunami that ensued "saw waves of about 4.7 (15ft) hit the shore," according to BBC News.
Some expressed relief that the death toll in Chile was not greater.
"In Paihuano, another town in the Coquimbo region, the earthquake on Wednesday 'generated a lot of fright,' but was 'fortunately not very harmful in this sector," the mayor, Lorenzo Torres, said, according to The New York Times.
Though the death toll was not as high as other natural disasters that have previously struck the region, the damage was pretty costly with a death toll of more than 5,000 people, according to France 24. Many aftershocks occurred following the earthquake as well.
The tsunami that hit the coastal ares of Coquimbo offset many activities and life overall for many Chileans. With many Chileans "traveling around the coast for a week of celebrations for independence day," many people became engulfed in this natural disaster.
