De Je Brewer, a 9th grade girl in Los Angeles, was shot twice while shielding her 10-month-old nephew from bullets in a drive-by shooting.
Brewer, a straight-A student, was outside of a relative's home with her nephew in an SUV when a car described as a dark green Pontiac Grand Prix began shooting, according to the Daily News. The car first pulled up behind them, and then the driver and passenger opened fire.
"I didn't know what to do, and then I felt something hit my arm. I touched it and it was blood. So I tried to cover the baby, and I laid over him," the teen from San Bernadino said while describing the scene, The Root reported.
She was only in Los Angeles for a family funeral along with her siblings. The baby was not harmed in this attack, and the teen wasn't too badly wounded. The two bullets pierced her arm and back but luckily missed her lung.
The teen's aunt Donna Brooks believes that the attack was "random," and police have not yet made any arrest. "It's vicious," she said, according to NBC California. "It's evil and it's cruel."
Brewer has described herself as "blessed," and many are calling her a hero.
