Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado suffered a gruesome knee injury in Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Machado was carted off the field on a stretcher and is likely done for the season.
The injury occurred in the seventh inning of Monday's eventual 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay, ESPN reports. Machado singled and ran for first base. His foot landed awkwardly on the bag, appearing to slide off, and the 21-year-old immediately collapsed. He clutched his left knee and writhed on the ground, visibly in pain.
Staff eventually carted Machado off on a stretcher.
The full extent of the injury is unknown. Orioles manager Buck Showalter declined to speculate on the severity of Machado's injury.
"I'm sure we won't get a full diagnosis until we get an MRI back in Baltimore (on Tuesday)," said Showalter, via ESPN. "...It certainly doesn't look very promising right now."
Machado has played well all season for Baltimore. He's batted .283 with 14 homers, 71 RBIs, a league-leading 51 doubles and a .314 OBP. Since entering the league last August, Machado has started in all 207 of the team's games, according to CBS Sports.
"It's horrible," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, via ESPN. "Hate to see that. This young man blows out his knee, possibly, and then this collision in right field (between Alexi Casilla and Nick Markakis). You can see how badly they wanted it, too."
Machado is scheduled to undergo an MRI sometime on Tuesday.
