MLB RUMORS: Milwaukee Brewers to Hire Houston Astros Assistant General Manager, David Stearns, as GM

UPDATE: The Milwaukee Brewers have officially announced David Stearns will be their new general manager.

According to the latest rumors, the Milwaukee Brewers are expected to name David Stearns - the current assistant general manager of the Houston Astros - as their new general manager.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal first reported the hiring earlier in the day and Brian McTaggart of MLB.com confirmed it shortly thereafter.

The Brewers are expected to make the announcement on Monday. The 30-year-old Stearns is in his third years with the Astros and has previously worked for the Commissioner's Office, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle.

Previous rumors suggested Oakland Athletics assistant GM Dan Kantrovitz was the frontrunner for the position. It hadn't been reported Stearns was interviewing with the team. Milwaukee had interviewed or was set to interview Mike Hazen (Red Sox), Tyrone Brooks (Pirates), Chaim Bloom and Matt Arnold (Rays) and Matt Klentak (Angels).

Ben Cherington was also considered a candidate for the vacancy, but it was said the former Red Sox GM was not actively pursuing jobs for 2016.

Brewers' owner Mark Attanasio was believed to be looking for a young, analytical general manager to succeed Doug Melvin, and it looks that's what he'll be getting.

"In his current role, David, 30, assists General Manager Jeff Luhnow in all baseball operations capacities including player evaluations, player transactions, and contract negotiations and helps oversee the Astros' scouting, player development, and analytics departments," according to the Houston Astros website.

Stay tuned for the official announcement, which is expected to come tomorrow.
