Aegean Sea: Migrants Feared Dead In Twin Naval Disasters

Two fatal incidents in the Aegean Sea transpired on Sunday, after a boat carrying migrants collided with a Turkish ferry and another sank due to rough seas. The incidents, the latest in the ongoing migrant crisis, possibly claimed dozens of lives, on top of the 13 people confirmed dead due to the incidents so far, according to Fox News.

Thirteen people have been confirmed dead from the fatal collision between the migrants' boat and the Turkish ferry. Meanwhile, the Greek Coast Guard has been dispatched to search for the 27 people who are still missing after their vessel sank off the island of Lesbos.

Overall, the Greek Coast Guard states that about 29 people have been rescued in the two incidents as of writing, reports the Hamilton Spectator.

The twin disasters on Sunday highlight the high risk being faced by migrants has they attempt to flee conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, with many of the refugees opting to seek sanctuary in Europe.

Recently, however, a number of European nations have opted to close their doors to the thousands of migrants trying to enter the EU, sparking heated debates involving the EU's leaders.

Despite the risks of sea travel, as highlighted by the death of Aylan Kurdi after his family was rejected asylum by Canada, many have braved the rough seas for the chance of having a fresh start at another country.
