The Colorado Rockies (63-86) are on their way to another last-place finish in the NL West. They've been one of the worst teams in the MLB over the past five seasons, three of which have been under manager Walt Weiss.
Recent comments from general manager Jeff Bridich loosely suggest the team might go in another direction, which is now spurring rumors about Weiss' job security beyond 2015.
"He's got another year on his contract, everybody knows that," Bridich said of Weiss on MLB Network Radio over the weekend. "We'll have meetings and sit down and talk and see what the right fit is.
"This isn't the time or place yet to say 100 percent yes or no. He's got to have a part in that too. We'll let the season play out before we make that determination."
Well, the Rockies have 13 games remaining and there's not really much more for Bridich to see. Colorado is tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the second-worst record in the MLB and the two clubs sit only in front of the Philadelphia Phillies (56-94). Additionally, Weiss was hired during Dan O'Dowd's tenure as general manager, so Bridich inherited Weiss (when he was assistant GM) and may want to pick his own manager for 2016.
Weiss is just 203-270 as the team's manager since 2013. The Rockies finished last in the NL West two seasons ago, fourth in 2014 and are pretty much a lock to finish last again in 2015. Colorado has finished top-10 in runs scored in 2013 (10th), 2014 (third) and are expected to again in 2015 (currently seventh), but their team ERA finished at the bottom of the MLB in 2013 (28th), 2014 (last) and could finish last again in 2015 (currently last).
Although Coors Field isn't a favorable venue to pitch in, the fact that the Rockies have failed to develop pitchers over the past three seasons could be a reflection on Weiss. So could the team's inability to win more than 74 games in each of the past three seasons.
"Bridich's non-answer was telling," writes Nick Groke of the Denver Post. "In 11 months as the GM, he hasn't tipped his hand. Before his trade of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in July, Bridich, like with Weiss, said he will wait to talk about the future."
The Rockies will likely be the subject of many rumors once the season ends because they are in need of veteran pitching and could also trade star player Carlos Gonzalez due to his recent surge over the past few months.
