Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Tuesday that the Al Shabaab terrorist attack has officially ended, BBC News reported.
In a television address to the nation, the president said five attackers were killed and 11 were detained by authorities. He also said Kenya has "shamed and defeated" the terrorists although the losses are "immense," adding that 61 civilians and six soldiers died in the attack.
Kenyatta also declared three days of national mourning which will begin on Wednesday.
"I promise that we shall have a full accountability for the mindless destruction, deaths, pain, loss and suffering we have all undergone as a national family.
"These cowards will meet justice, as will their accomplices and patrons, wherever they are," Kenyatta said.
According to the president, several bodies -- including those of terrorists -- were presumably trapped underneath rubble after three floors of the mall collapsed after a fire on Monday.
In the assault that lasted for four days, 175 people were wounded and 62 people remain in the hospital, in addition to those being treated for shock.
There is no official count of foreigner deaths, but at least 18 from England, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Peru, India, Ghana, South Africa, and China were killed in the mall attack.
On Saturday, multiple gunmen and reportedly one armed woman stormed the high-end Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi and began shooting at customers and eventually detonated explosives.
Members of the Al Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming it was revenge for Kenyan soldiers entering Somalia.
Earlier Tuesday, Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said "two or three Americans" were among the Al Shabaab attackers, in addition to a British woman that authorities previously dismissed as a man dressed in women's clothing.
Kenyatta said he could not confirm Mohamed's claims and that authorities are performing tests to identify the ethnicities of the terrorists.
