The musical notes could be heard of five young wolves howling as they make their way down the rocky road in the James Bay region of Northern Quebec in a new video. The driver of the vehicle is witness to a very rare moment, because wolves often stay out of sight since they tend to be very shy, according to Wolf Science.
Just because we can't see the mother on the video doesn't mean she isn't around, and luckily, the driver is inside the car. Normally, wolves are not aggressive toward humans, but if they were put into a predicament the mother wolf would become very protective over her pups, reported Cottage Life.
In the video, you can see that the mother isn't anywhere in sight; howling is a form of communication when trying to find members of the pack, according to Seacrest Wolf Preserve. However, howling can also be used for claiming territory, as a rally call, and even to help strengthen community bonds as a form of "singing." It is crucial that pups learn the forms of communicating as young as possible. The mother will actually make a whimpering sound to let the pups know that it is time to nurse.
What is amazing about wolves is how they travel in packs and work together as a team. The mother of the wolves isn't the only one who looks after them; all of the other wolves in the pack help as well -communal living in a sense. You can also see the pups sniffing the ground as they run along the road. Their sense of smell is 100 times greater than humans' sense of smell. Their sense of smell is also an additional way to communicate, as pheromones are excreted from scent glands on their bodies. They even will paw at the dirt to release more pheromones used for tracking each other.
