Toronto Raptors RUMORS: Anthony Bennett Not An Option?

Anthony Bennett is reportedly on the verge of reaching a buyout agreement with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, so naturally the discussion is going to go towards where he might end up after he is let go. The Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trail Blazers could decide to claim him on waivers as they have the cap room but if they don't Bennett will become a free agent. One of the first teams that comes to mind is Bennett's hometown team the Toronto Raptors but he is unlikely to be playing basketball at home this season, according to Michael Grange of Rogers Sportsnet.

Bennett was born in Toronto so it was only natural that they came up when the news of Bennett's buyout came out especially when you consider fellow Toronto native Cory Joseph just signed with the Raptors this offseason and there have been rumors about Tristan Thompson (another Toronto native) signing there next summer. Even though the Raptors love to bring players home this is likely not one of those cases as they just don't have room for the 22 year old.

As it stands right now the Raptors frontcourt has seven players signed to contracts. Jonas Valanciunas and Patrick Patterson are the projected starters with Bismack Biyombo, Luis Scola and James Johnson all expected to get minutes behind the starters. Add in the fact that Dwane Casey has said he wants to go small more often this year, which would put DeMarre Carroll at the four more often, and you have a team that won't be able to offer much, if any, more playing time than the Timberwolves would have.

Bennett and his representatives are reportedly seeking a buyout from Minnesota because they have a deep frontcourt over there and Bennett realized he didn't have a great opportunity to get playing time. Even though the Raptors are his hometown team he likely wouldn't want to sign there because their roster would offer the same issues as Minnesota's did.

Despite the Raptors likely lack of interest, Bennett is still very likely to get a shot somewhere this season as he is a former first overall pick, with a lot of talent that is extremely young. Bennett has had a solid summer playing for the Team Canada and is looking to prove this season that he is not a huge bust; it is now just a matter of where he will have that opportunity.
