Samsung, one of the world's leading innovators in smartphone and mobile device technology has announced that it will be introducing a smartphone with a curved glass display next month.
At a media event in Seoul on Wednesday, D.K.. Lee, Samsung's mobile business head of strategic marketing's said "We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October."
The remark was made at a press event for the launching of the Galaxy Note 3 phablet smartphone, according to Reuters.
So far the company has given no other details on the handset other than a vague unveiling date of sometime in October. It's also unclear if Lee is referring to a much rumored smartphone with a flexible display that the company first showed off a prototype of at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2011.
Samsung, which recently overtook long-time rival Apple as the world's most profitable smartphone maker in July, has made a name for itself with its popular Galaxy lineup of smartphones. It has developed a lot of major developments for smartphone users, however, many of them are simple gimmicks.
In fact, according to CNET, the company experimented with a curved display on its Nexus S, a smartphone designed to offer a "Contour Display" that fit more comfortably in the human palm. However, this was less of an innovation from the company, as much as it was a gimmick.
Meanwhile, the company's competitors at Apple are also reportedly working on a curved or flexible display for either its smartphone or the much rumored wearable wrist accessory, which patents and new hiring's suggest is well under development over at Apple.
It's unclear if Samsung will be live streaming the unveiling of its flexible display screen but it typically does for major unveilings. Stay with us for an update on the live stream if and when it is announced.
