The Cleveland Cavaliers still have Tristan Thompson and his contract at the front of their minds but while that situation is still stagnant they are making other moves for training camp. The latest addition the Cavaliers have reportedly made is bringing in veteran forward Austin Daye on a training camp invite, according to Sham Charania of Yahoo Sports.
The deal is reportedly for just one year and presumably offers little to no salary protection for Daye who is now 27 years old. Daye is a 6 foot-10 small forward who played two years at Gonzaga where he was a star player. Daye will now be entering his seventh season in the NBA but he has yet to do much in his career so far.
Daye has been with five teams in his six NBA seasons the last of which was the Atlanta Hawks. Daye spent his first three and a half seasons with the Detroit Pistons and had his best season in his second year there when he averaged 7.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in more than 20 minutes per game while making more than 40 percent of his threes. For his career Daye shoots 35 percent from three but since his second year in the league he hasn't gotten much playing time and also hasn't been nearly as productive which is probably directly correlated.
Daye's chances of making Cleveland's roster are slim to none unless there is an injury in training camp. Assuming the Thompson situation gets resolved, Cleveland has 14 locks to make the roster and there have been reports that they want to keep a roster spot open to start the season just in case they think they need to make a trade or add from outside the organization. Daye's only chance of making the team is if he impresses so much that he makes the Cavs change their minds on leaving an empty roster spot which isn't out of the realm of possibility but seems unlikely.
