Petco Park surely sounds like a hospitable place, and it proved to be on Thursday night when a woman gave birth at the game between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
Last night Petco Park announced that a baby boy was born during the Padres' game, which is the first birth at the ballpark in its 11-year history. The boy, who was born "around the third inning," was named Levi, according to Susan Shroder of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The mother and baby boy were taken by ambulance from Petco Park to Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center after an on-staff nurse and midwife named Donna Borowy assisted in giving the birth.
Such an incident was also a first for Dick Enberg, who has been the Padres' play-by-play broadcaster for the past six seasons. Earlier in the week he announced that he would be retiring after the 2016 season after an illustrious career as a sports broadcaster.
While the Padres have heavy hearts regarding the matter, they have wasted no time in finding his replacement. The news has not been confirmed, but as of right now the team is pursuing a beloved Boston Red Sox broadcaster to succeed Enberg.
"According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the San Diego Padres are aggressively pursuing [Dan] Orsillo for a significant role with their television broadcast team on Fox Sports San Diego," writes Chad Finn of the Boston Globe.
"Orsillo has spoken with the Padres about a long-term contract that includes an opportunity to broadcast some national games for parent company Fox Sports."
Orsillo, who's NESN's Red Sox play-by-play announcer is being replaced after the season, which has caused a stir among Bostonians.
Although this is subject to rumors, the connection makes sense because Enberg is nearing the end of his run and the Padres likely want someone reputable to replace the 80-year-old.
