Iranian officials revealed Saturday that Tehran has signed contracts worth $21 billion with Russia to purchase aircraft and satellite-related equipment.
Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO) chief Manouchehr Manteghi said in an interview with Sputnik that the deal was signed during the MAKS 2015 international air show in Russia, reported Press TV.
The deal involved Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ-100) and satellite-related equipment, according to Reuters.
"There is a large share of contracts for the purchase of this type of aircraft," managing director of Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO) Manouchehr Manteghi told Sputnik.
The MAKS-2015 International Aviation and Space Salon was held in the city of Zhukovsky in the Moscow region between Aug. 25 and Aug. 30.
Iran and Russia have also signed an agreement to cooperate in aircraft engine production recently.
"We plan that we will carry out joint projects in the areas of design, production and promotion of platforms for a new generation engine for further economic exploitation," Manteghi, who is also Iran's deputy defence minister, said during the air show in August, according to Sputnik.
The Iran-Russia aircraft deal came amidst increasing cooperation between Russia, Iran and Syria in the fight against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) jihadist group. Russia, Iran, Syria and Iraq agreed to set up an intelligence center in Baghdad.
"The main goal of the center will be gathering, processing and analyzing current information about the situation in the Middle East - primarily for fighting ISIS," a Russian military source said, according to SANA news agency. "The agreement is a milestone for uniting the region's countries in the war on terrorism - primarily on Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terrorists."
