"Who's The Boss" star Danny Pintauro revealed in an interview that he is HIV-positive. The former child star opened up about the disease on the latest episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now." He was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. Pintauro played Jonathan Bower on the long-running '80s sitcom that also starred Tony Danza, Alyssa Milano and Judith Light.
The actor came out as gay in 1997 and had kept the disease a secret for more than 10 years.
"I'm HIV-positive," he tearfully told Oprah. "And I have been for 12 years."
"I went in for a regular checkup," he said. "You know, as a responsible gay man, you're getting an HIV test done every six months. And you sort of waited two weeks on pins and needles, or at least I did, because I was just terrified of the idea of getting HIV."
Pintauro also opened up about his use of crystal meth.
"Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions," he said. "You have no limits. And if you want to explore that adventurous side, taking the drug is going to put you there."
"I truly thought I was being safe, and obviously, I wasn't," Pintauro said.
His HIV diagnosis did not stop him from finding love. In 2014 Pintauro married his husband Will Tabares, reported CNN.
Pintauro posted a picture of the married couple on Saturday along with the caption "Last meal as a nobody. First meal as an activist," he captioned the photo.
