Netflix has expanded support for "Super HD" content to all subscribers regardless of their internet service provider, the company announced Thursday.
Netflix has expanded its support of "Super HD" content, the media provider's highest-definition picture format, to all subscribers regardless of their internet service providers (ISP). Super HD is Netflix's highest quality version of 1080p video format, which was only available to customers whose ISPs had direct connection with Netflix. But the latest announcement allows all customers to access the finest video print via their HD supported devices.
"All Netflix members, regardless of their Internet service provider (ISP), now have access to the highest quality HD streams available on Netflix," Netflix director of corporate communications, Joris Evers, wrote in a blog post Thursday.
Earlier in January, Netflix rolled out its Super HD video quality to all customers whose ISPs adopted its Open Connect network, which delivers highly optimized video content. The service uses "adaptive streaming" to adjust to the best video quality depending on available bandwidth.
Netflix's decision to expand room to include all subscribers to access the Super HD content on their HD supported devices is a result of numerous requests for its quality performance. Super HD content is limited to users with supported devices like PlayStation 3, Apple TV with 1080p, Roku with 1080p, Nintendo Wii U, Windows 8 App, TiVo Premiere DVR, and Blu-ray players, smart TVs, and streaming media players with existing Netflix 1080p support.
Netflix openly invited all ISPs to join its Open Connect network, which comes at no cost to ISPs. Cablevision Systems, Cox Communications, RCN, Suddenlink and Google Fiber are active members of Open Connect and have ranked highly in the Netflix's monthly ISP Speed Index.
"We continue to encourage ISPs to adopt Netflix Open Connect, our highly optimized video content delivery network," Evers added. "Open Connect is available at no cost to ISPs and is designed to deliver the best possible Netflix experience by storing the TV shows and movies Netflix members want to watch as close to them as possible."
