Former iPod engineer JP Labrosse has designed a desk equipped with smart technology, which adjusts itself to a sitting or standing mode and even prompts you to take a break and monitors the time you spend tied to your desk.
We are tied to our lifestyles so closely that a change is often overlooked. But several studies have shown that sitting for long hours is an early invitation to the grave. But how often do we consciously make an effort to take a walk every now and then for our own sakes. That is the question which may have crossed the former iPod engineer JP Labrosse's mind before he built a smart desk. That's right! A desk that changes its position so you can work while standing or sitting and even alerts you when you need a walk.
The Stir Kinetic Desk, can be called a next-generation desk that monitors your sitting and standing patterns and adjusts its behavior accordingly. It has a built-in thermal sensor that knows when you are ready to work. The Kinetic Desk also has an integrated 4.3-inch touchscreen placed at the lower left hand corner to display the number of calories burnt throughout the day and logs the number of minutes you spent standing and sitting throughout the month. By double tapping the touchscreen, the desk will change its position from sitting mode to standing mode and vice versa.
The Stir Desk is integrated with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, using which it communicates with the health apps on your smartphone. This helps the Stir Desk to better understand your behavior and act accordingly.
"Say a person went for a three mile run right before they went to work, that person may not want to be standing right after that," Labrosse, Stir CEO, said in a statement to The Wired. "The desk can actually learn that pattern and adjust."
The Stir Desk also alerts users to take a "breath of fresh air" from time to time via its "Whisperbreath" feature by moving an inch lower or higher.
The desk has a standard, efficient and a classy look crafted out of hardwood with powder-coated metal legs. Stir allows customers to customize their desk by choosing different colors and finishes. On the left side of the desk, a small button allows you to change between active and regular mode. In order to prevent flooding the desk with unnecessary cables, the desk has beautifully designed power port compartments at the back of the desk. It includes four AC ports and two USB ports with a covering lid that makes it appear like a surface of the table.
With all the designs and features equipped within the smart desk, it only weighs 75 pounds but comes with a hefty $3,890 price tag. Stir will start shipping the Kinetic Desk soon, but at the moment buyers can express their interest by signing up for updates from the company.
