Southern wide receiver Devon Gales suffered a severe spinal cord injury including several fractures in his neck, according Jon Cooper of Saturday Down South.
Gales was injured in the third quarter against Georgia, when he attempted to make a block. He was taken off on a stretcher, and remained motionless. Gales has had surgery to stabilize the injury and now has movement in his upper body, according to Cooper.
Gales parents were not able to attend the game, but they were flown by to the hospital by the University of Georgia. Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt visited Gales on Sunday, and opened his press conference this week by asking fans to help contribute to the Davon Gales fund.
Southern University Athletics along with Southern University System Foundation has launched the Devon Gales Fund Monday. The fund will provide financial help to Gales and his family for medical expenses.
Southern coach Dawson Odums said there has been no news on Gales' condition, and that the Gales family has asked for privacy, according to Les East of theadvocate.com.
"He's speaking, and he's talking, and he understands the road that's in front of him," Odums said, via the Advocate. "He's a great guy, and he has the will and determination to handle whatever problems he has."
