Meteors Spotted In Alberta And Chicago; Most Monthly Sightings In 10 Years (VIDEO, PHOTO)

A Canadian officer was driving along a highway when he saw something unexpected in the sky.

The Alberta "Mountie's" dash-cam captured a video of a brilliant fireball streaking across the sky, KFOR reported.

The officer told the news station that he "freaked out" when he saw the other-worldly object pass almost right in front of him. He spent the rest of the night scanning the skies to see if another blazing entity would show up.

An astronomer who works nearby at Telus World of Science confirmed the object was a meteor making a dramatic appearance, CTV Edmonton reported.

"Definitely what people saw this weekend, on Saturday night, if they were out and about around 9:35 p.m., was a very very bright meteor," Frank Florian with the Telus World of Science said. "Sometimes, it's deemed a fireball because it far exceeds a regular streak of light which is a normal meteor."

"This one was definitely substantial in size and created a nice light show for anyone out and about on Saturday night," he said.

The astronomer said the object was most likely a lone meteor, and not part of a larger shower.

This month marks the highest instances of meteor sightings in the past decade, according to the Herald Sun.

Early this morning Chicago residents spotted a green and red fireball overhead that was visible for about four seconds.

A TV helicopter spotted the object from the air.

"My photographer was like, Holy cow, did you see that?" the pilot said, the Herald Sun reported. "It was very vivid. It was very bright. It almost looked like somebody took a flare and threw it across our windshield."

"I've been flying over 14 years. I've never seen anything like that. You could not have missed it, I'll tell you," the pilot said.
