A newborn baby has been thrown from a seventh floor apartment window in the Bronx; her umbilical cord was still attached, according to Crime Feed. The mother, Jennifer Berry, has been charged with murder.
The baby was found Tuesday, unresponsive and unconscious in an alleyway outside the apartment building. She had received multiple blunt force injuries consistent with a fall from great height.
Berry, 33, admitted to police officials that she gave birth while in the shower and that the baby wasn't breathing, so she tossed her out the window – umbilical cord, placenta and all.
"She gave birth to an 8-pound girl and dropped the newborn seven stories to the pavement. The medical examiner has determined that the baby was alive," Assistant District Attorney Georgia Barker told the judge at Berry's arraignment.
"There was air in the lungs, this was a healthy baby girl," Barker said.
The baby's father Giovanni Johnson, 28, was in the apartment at the time time but officials said he was unaware of what had happened and added that Berry had denied being pregnant.
"I didn't know (about the pregnancy)," a rattled Johnson told The New York Daily News Tuesday, his voice cracking. "I didn't know any of this. I've been cleared of all charges."
Manhattan Funeral Home owner Peter DeLuca inquired with officials about arrangements for the newborn, according to The New York Times. DeLuca's 13-month-old son died in 1987 and wants to ensure the baby girl gets buried in a proper grave.
In an added bizarre twist, Jennifer Berry used to work for Child Services.
Berry was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter as an autopsy revealed the cause of death to be multiple blunt-force trauma. Berry is currently being remanded without bail.
