Dwayne Wade is coming off a tremendous season for the Miami Heat a year ago where he was named to his 11th consecutive All-Star game but he wasn't as efficient as he usually is. Going into last season Wade was hoping to make the three-point shot a bigger part of his game and that didn't go so well so this season Wade reportedly plans to take much less three point shots than he did a year ago, according to Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post.
This is very good news for the Heat just for the simple fact that Wade is not a very good three point shooter. Last season he shot just 28 percent from deep and he is a career 29 percent shooter from three while never having shot better than 32 percent from long range. From 2008-2011 Wade regularly attempted more than 200 threes per season but in the 2011-12 season he started to attempt much less three point shots and saw his field goal percentage rise as a result.
Wade is lethal mid-range shooter but he has never been able to consistently make three pointers. In the 2012 and 2013 seasons Wade made more than 52 percent of his field goals as he attempted less than 100 threes in the two years combined. Last season Wade shot 102 threes and saw his field goal percentage drop to 47 percent. 47 percent from the field for a guard is still extremely good but Wade is used to being closer to 50 percent.
This can't all be blamed on the three point shot though as Wade saw a decrease in his two point field goal percentage last season too. Wade made 49 percent of his field goal attempts inside the arc a year ago which was the lowest it had been since 2007-08. Shooting less threes will certainly help Wade improve his field goal percentage but he will also have to improve his shooting from inside the arc if he wants to get back to that 52 percent shooting mark.
Typically a team having a shooting guard that doesn't shoot well from the perimeter would hurt them but the Heat should be just fine as their power forward Chris Bosh shot 38 percent from three last season. Wade getting back to going to the rim will only help the Heat as that is when he is at his best.
