Standing in defiance to a growing trend where retailers stay open during holidays, sometimes staying open for long stretches at a time, Staples has decided to put an end to it and will be closed for Thanksgiving this year.
The company said in a statement Thursday that employees should be able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. As such, the stores will be closed and online exclusive deals will be offered during the holiday, according to USA Today.
"On Thanksgiving Day, customers can shop from home on Staples.com and then continue their shopping in stores starting at 6 a.m. on Black Friday," Demos Parneros, president of Staples' North American stores and online shopping, said in a statement, The Consumerist reported.
However, with Black Friday coming the very next day, employees won't be able to relax too much. Staples will open its stories on Black Friday at 6 a.m.
"We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way," Parneros said in a company statement, according to North Jersey.
Staples is the first major retailer to announce holiday plans for this year, as well as the first to make the unprecedented move to close its stores. While other retailers might scoff at the idea, it might be wise for the others to follow Staple's example since Black Friday weekend sales fell last year.
