The coaching changes for the Miami Dolphins may not end with head coach Joe Philbin. Less than an hour after the Dolphins announced that they were parting ways with Philbin, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that Kevin Coyle, the embattled Miami defensive coordinator, is "expected" to be fired as well.
When word first emerged that the Dolphins were considering coaching changes, Coyle's name was the one that popped up most frequently. Despite the addition of Ndamukong Suh this offseason, the Dolphins defense has been putrid through four weeks, allowing an average of 25.2 points and 399.5-yards per game, good enough for 30th in the league.
Reports have emerged over the past week that Dolphins players had issues with Coyle's schemes, which they deemed to be unnecessarily complex. One report suggested that a big reason for Suh's limited production was the way in which Coyle was attempting to deploy him, attempting to scheme him into impact plays instead of allowing the athletic marvel to do it on his own.
The Dolphins defensive players reportedly held a closed-door meeting with Coyle ahead of the team's game this past weekend in London against the New York Jets, wherein they expressed their frustrations with the scheme and the utilization of certain players, like cornerbacks Brice McCain and Jamar Taylor.
With Philbin gone, this has already become a lost season for the Dolphins, despite team owner Stephen Ross's assertion that the team can "improve quickly."
If there are other changes that need to be made, changes like at defensive coordinator, then there's no reason not to make them now.
