Miami Marlins, Ichiro Suzuki Agree to One-Year Contract; Chicago Cubs SP Dan Haren to Retire After Season

UPDATE: The Marlins have announced the signing of Ichiro.

The Chicago Cubs will face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Wild Card Game on Wednesday, and it could be Dan Haren's last game in the MLB. On the other hand, the Miami Marlins are set to announce the re-signing of Ichiro Suzuki.

After making his MLB debut as a pitcher on the final game of the season, Ichiro will return for his 16th season once the Marlins officially announce the transaction, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. The 41-year-old didn't have a great year with Miami, but his veteran presence is something the franchise values a lot.

He's also 65 hits away from reaching 3,000 for his MLB career.

Ichiro's agent, John Boggs, told FOX Sports' Jon Morosi on Monday that the veteran "is definitely planning to play in 2016 and beyond."

That won be the case for Cubs' starter Dan Haren.

Haren, 35, alluded to the fact that he might retire after 2015 earlier in the season, but he confirmed it after Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

"That was it for me," Haren told Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com. "If I have to pitch in the postseason. I'll be ready for sure."

"Happy the way the last few starts have gone," Haren said. "Being able to contribute to this amazing team. I'm just thankful to be a part of it."

The right-hander is 11-9 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 132 strikeouts in 32 starts (187 1/3 innings) this season with the Cubs and Miami Marlins. Chicago acquired him at the trade deadline and he came up big in the last month after going 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA in six starts.

He's 153-132 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 391 career games (380 starts) in 13 MLB seasons.
