Among the stars of Microsoft's big event on Tuesday are the tech giant's latest foray into the smartphone market, with the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL taking on the mantle as the company's flagship mobile devices.
Both devices feature high-end specs that are comparable to the latest flagships from rival companies. The phones themselves are quite large, with the Lumia 950 packing a 5.2 inch screen and the Lumia XL featuring a 5.7 screen. Both are equipped with Windows 10 mobile and the same QuadHD 2560x1440 resolution, according to Mashable.
The two handsets feature comparable specs internally, utilizing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 808 and 810 processors, three GB of RAM, and a fairly hefty 3,000 mAh battery. Both devices also feature a 20 megapixel rear camera, a five megapixel front camera, 32 GB of storage, Qi wireless charging and USB Type-C ports, making the phones compatible with future devices.
Though both phones are impressive on paper, Microsoft states that several design aspects of the phones make it a groundbreaking device in the mobile world. For one, the handsets feature liquid cooling for its processors, allowing for tablet-class performance. The phones' rear cameras also includes optical image stabilization and a new innovation called "triple LED RGB," which is designed to eliminate red eye permanently, reports PC World.
The most heavyweight feature of Microsoft's flagship devices, however, may be Continuum, a feature that essentially turns the handsets into lightweight desktop PCs. With a special docking station that includes HDMI and DisplayPort outputs along with three USB ports, a Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL user will be able to make use of the full Windows 10 Mobile interface on any supported screen.
The handsets will be made available in November, priced at $549 for the Lumia 950 and $649 for the Lumia 950 XL, respectively.
