"The Internet is a right, not a privilege," at least in the minds of those at FreedomPop, an Internet company that just launched a beta of the world's first free mobile service to all of its subscribers.
According to PCMag, the company celebrated its one-year anniversary by launching a beta, which offers customers 500MB of free 4G data, 500 free text messages and 200 free anytime voice minutes per month for life. All calls between FreedomPop users are free.
If the idea of not spending an arm and a leg on cell service is appealing to you but you're the type of person who can't subside on just 500 texts or three hours of talk each month, FreedomPopus also offering an $11 per month contract and commitment free deal that will add onto those numbers. The company boasts this deal as being 80 to 90 percent less expensive than similar plans from larger carriers.
"A user paying $1,500 per year for mobile services today can save well over $1,000 per year for the same plan with FreedomPop," CEO Stephen Stokols said in a statement. "That is real value, real savings and a real meteor to the current market dynamics."
The company is offering the beta on the HTC EVO Design smartphone. The device will sell for a discounted $99. The company has said it plans to launch additional Android handsets later this year.
"FreedomPop is changing the mobile market forever with the sole intent of bringing better value to the consumer and increasing accessibility," Stokols said. "FreedomPop's mission is to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, convenient and essential communication services. With this launch, we've just taken our largest step to date towards delivering on this objective."
