The summer 2015 blockbuster resurrected some long dead franchises in spectacular fashion. "Mad Max: Fury Road" was an epic adrenaline ride and "Jurassic World" tapped into the fountain of nostalgia to set box office records. Yet despite the successful blasts from the pasts, "Terminator Genysis" failed to spur up the same type of excitement as the original franchise.
Although the film has done well in China, its lackluster box office total had some thinking the series was on permanent hold. Even the studio realized that "Genysis" may have misfired on certain cylinders.
Producer Dana Goldberg recently attended The Wrap's 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference and addressed the future of the series.
"(We're using) data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn't work for them, so that the next [step] we take with the franchise is the right one."
Skydance may not be completely done with the franchise just yet, but it does look as if they are taking a step back for the meantime. Any potential sequels may want to try and appeal to a more global audience, as 80 percent of the film's $440 million gross came overseas.
"Genysis" was criticized for its uneven tone, convoluted plot and rejiggering of established "Terminator" canon. All told, the studio seemed more concerned with setting up a new trilogy than telling a quality "Terminator" story that could stand on its own.
We'll see if they can right their past wrongs.
